Natural Remedies at Your Fingertips

posted 2011 Jul by Molley McManus

Renowned medical researcher, Dr. John Heinerman, has traveled the world for three decades searching out the remedies perfected by healers, doctors and scientists. Here is an excerpt (gently modified) from NATURAL REMEDIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD by Dr. John Heinerman:

MIGRAINE

An individual reported having suffered migraines for the previous six months and asked me for help. I answered that headaches could be the results of muscle tension, a hidden infection, disturbances in the blood vessels in the head, or imbalances in blood sugar levels. Once the exact cause could be isolated then treatment procedures would be easier to do.

But, since neither of us really knew what the determining factor in his case could be, we settled for some general remedial information. I mentioned that white-willow bark or valerian capsules (three at a time on an empty stomach) might be substituted for regular aspirin or nonaspirin or ibuprofen. For more severe headaches, though, I recommend a combination of hops, catnip, and valerian powders in capsule form. I advised the person to purchase these respective herb powders from a health-food store and then mix one teaspoon of each together before filling 00 size capsules and taking four of them at one time.

I gave some dietary advice, which was essentially to stay away from chocolate, foods containing MSG (mostly Chinese food), and hot dogs and other processed meats (because of their chemical preservatives). I cautioned about "hidden MSG" (monosodium glutamate) in processed-food products listing hydrolyzed protein, autolyzed yeast, sodium caseinate, and calcium caseinate on their labels. I urged more stricter label reading before buying food products.

I explained that other herbs, such as feverfew, ginger, peppermint, and skullcap were ideal for warding off future migraines. Any of these could be made into individual teas and taken warm in one-cup doses as needed.

Minerals are especially important in the regulation of headaches. A good ca1cium magnesium formula, such as the one sold by ShapeRite (three capsules at once) always helps to relax tense muscles, tight nerves, and constricted blood vessels. Chromium is very useful for maintaining normal blood sugar levels; Trace Minerals Research has such a product that is sold in many health-food stores (one to two tablets twice daily). (See Product Appendix under respective company names for more details.)

Other helpful therapies for finding relief or a permanent solution to the problem include acupressure, massage, aromatherapy, thyroid hormone therapy melatonin therapy, yoga, meditation, progressive relaxation, guided imagery, biofeedback training, acupuncture, psychiatric cognitive restructuring, electrotherapy, colon (enema) therapy, Epsom salts bath soak, and Tiger Balm liniment rubs on the spine, neck, and temples. Regular eating, sleeping, exercising, and toilet functions will prevent migraine recurrences.

This individual promised to follow some of these recommendations and report back the results, which was done about three weeks later. I was never told which specifics were followed, only that my advice worked and the person was now free of headaches."

Age Spots?

Grandpa Walton Knew Better

Some years ago, the late actor Will Greer, who played Grandpa Walton in the television series The Waltons, appeared on a late-night TV talk show (probably Johnny Carson’s) and informed his host and the viewing audience that the sappy or milky latex from old dandelions or milkweed was a "sure-proof" way of getting rid of age spots. He recommended rubbing some of the white juice on the backs of the hands every day until they faded away.
